Visual Artist

Hi Im Gerard, welcome to my photography portfolio. I've been taken photographs since my mother bought me my first camera when I was eighteen.  Commenting on how many times I clicked the shutter-button she once said 

"Jesus, it's a good thing I didn't buy you a gun!"  

Photographs aside for a moment, I've always been visually creative, I've been drawing, painting and sculpting since I escaped the womb.  Iv'e completed practical courses in painting, photography, costume making and interior decorating. I have distinctions from two separate film and TV courses; one from a three year degree course in Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art Design & Technology and three subject distinctions from one year at Bray Institute of Further Education.

 Professionally I've designed and built sets for UTV, Young Scientist Expo and The Bell Table Arts Centre. Iv'e designed and made props and costumes for Three Mobile, the National Lottery, Carlsberg Comedy Festival, RTE, The Ark 

( children's cultural centre Dublin ) . I have designed art programmes for Imaginosity Childrens Museum and Bloom in the park . Music videos Iv'e produced and directed have been seen on RTE, Channel 6 and the Meteor Awards. I've done some other stuff but I wanna keep this short.

Photography

I started taking photographs in the late 80's.  I remember using old film SLR cameras and  experimenting . Then I'd wait a whole week to have two or three rolls of film processed and if I was lucky I'd get one or two  photos that weren't technical disasters. It was an expensive hobby and something I spent thousands on over the years.   There were no online tutorials in them days, you had to read actual books to learn different techniques on how your favourite photographers did their thing. After that it was 100% practice and 50% chance, it was truly a labour of love.  What I've learned I've learned mostly through mistakes, some books and the few classes I could afford to take during my 20's. 

I've been referred to as a photographer many times and even though I've studied it, gotten paid for it, had full and half page spreads in the Irish times, the Daily Mirror, Hot press, and the RTE Guide and my first exhibition "Liberties Inked" launched in the National College of Art and Design in June of 2013, from there it took pride of place  in Dublin City Hall as part of Culture Night where it ran for a month. The exhibition is currently touring libraries around Dublin.   I will always be a student of photography. I say this because  it is one of the only art forms  that will never cease to evolve and personally I'm constantly discovering new and interesting ways to make my work better as I  strive  for perfection.

It's my job to make things look more interesting and beautiful, photography is a pretty cool way to do this.
